What Is RGB LED Light Strip?

How Do RGB LED Light Strips Work?

Each RGB LED has three LEDs inside, one blue, one green, and one red. Since LEDs are dimmable by nature, each colored LED can produce all color hues of a single color. For example, the red LED will be able to produce all the colors you see below:

In fact, each colored LED can produce 256 shades of the same color. If you combine three colored LEDs together, that gives you over 16.7 million color combinations.

So, how does an RGB LED create these color combinations? It is a simple matter of playing with the brightness of each LED. For example, if you want the color purple you will increase the brightness of the red and blue LED while turning down the brightness for the green LED. Similarly, if you want the color yellow you will turn down the blue LED and turn up the red and green one. This color wheel demonstrates this process:

An RGB LED light strip works on the same principle. You can control the brightness and color of each strip using an RGB LED controller. More on that in the next section.

You can also create white light using RGB LED light strips. Just turn all three colored LEDs to the highest power to create white light. However, the white light created this way might have a little tint or hue.

RGB LED light strips are able to produce a number of colors but they do have some limitations. For example, they can’t create the color brown or light pink.

How To Control RGB LED Light Strips By Controller?

RGB LED light strips can be controlled using different kinds of controllers. There is a wide variety of LED controllers available in the market from single-zone RF controllers to DMX controllers that can handle up to 512 zones at the same time.

Types of RGB LED Light Strip Controllers

1. RF RGB Controllers for RGB Strip Lights

RF controllers are commonly used to control RGB LED light strips. They have a range of up to 20 meters. You can find analog and digital RF controllers as well as wired and wireless ones. We generally classify RF RGB LED controllers into two categories:

Single-Zone RF Controllers

These RF controllers allow you to control all of the RGB LED strips they are connected to. However, you can only control all the LED lights together. You can’t change the colors or manage the brightness of different areas independently.

Chapter 4:How is the led strip light making process?

As LED strip lights become more popular, the process of making them becomes more streamlined as well. LED strips are basically printed circuit boards (PCBs) that are welded together to get the right length. PCBs use a process called Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Assembly Process to mount LEDs and other components onto the board.

Using the PCBA process, we can actually customize your LEDs on a PCB level to match your specific lighting needs. We also do a quality control test at the end of each step to ensure our product is up to the mark.

Step 1: LED Reel Production

The first step in manufacturing a LED light strip is to place LEDs and other components together on a reel. Placing all components including LEDs and resistors on a reel ensures efficient pasting on the board later on in the process.

At Lightstec, we use a sophisticated piece of equipment to fix LED wafers onto a reel. We arrange these wafers in just the right order, ready for pasting in the next step of the process. The wafers are fixed using wire bonds. We use industrial gold that is 99.9999% pure to ensure the longevity of connection.

A spectra photometer automatically sorts LEDs based on current, voltage and color. This helps it connect LEDs with the same specs together on a single reel. Once the LED reels or strips are ready, we seal them in vacuum bags to protect them from dust and humidity.Quality Tests:After producing the reels, we put them through a baking process to dehumidify them before placing them in vacuum bags. We also do light color matching to maintain light consistency. Each reel also goes through a manual microscopic check to ensure the proper placement of wafers.

Step 2: Solder Paste Printing

The next step in LED strips manufacturing is getting the PCB ready to paste the LED components on it. This is accomplished using a process called Solder Paste Stenciling.

Solder paste is a greyish substance that contains tiny balls of metals called solders. The balls are made predominantly of steel with traces of silver and copper. This paste is applied on the PCB at the places where the components are to be mounted.

This was previously done manually, but thanks to advances in technology, this step is now taken care of by a specialized machine. It’s essential to apply the solder paste to the exact mounting places of the components and in precisely the right amount.

A mechanical fixture is used to hold the PCB and the stencil in place. Meanwhile, an applicator places a precise amount of solder on each intended place on the PCB. The machine then spreads the solder paste evenly across the PCB. When the stencil is removed, an even layer of solder paste is spread on the intended locations.

Step 3: Component Placement

After applying the solder paste, the SMT machine then positions the components in their intended places on the PCB. The LEDs on the reel are placed on the PCB using a robotic device that puts each component exactly where it belongs.

This process was previously done manually but that led to quality control issues. Since then, SMT machines come equipped with specialized devices that take care of placing the components correctly.

We use high-tech Japanese SMT machines that help us maintain our high standards and quality. 

Step 4: Reflow Soldering

Now that the solder and components are in place on the PCB, you need to make sure they stay there. This is done by putting the PCB through a process called Reflow Soldering.
The PCB board, along with the pasted components, is placed on a conveyer belt. This conveyor belt takes the board to a reflow oven. This oven is similar to a commercial pizza oven. It consists of a series of heaters that heat the PCB gradually until it reaches a temperature of 250 degrees Celsius (480 degrees Fahrenheit).

At this temperature the solders inside the solder paste melt. Once they melt, the conveyer belt moves the PCB further through the oven where a series of coolers bring the temperature down. This gradual decrease in temperature solidifies the solder again. This creates a permanent bond between the LED components and the PCB.
Quality Tests:After the reflow process, it’s time to test our LED strips. We test each strip to make sure the brightness, color, and other specifications are just as designed.

Step 4: Welding

The LED lights come out of the reflow as 50 cm strips. They are then welded together by connecting one strip with the other. We can connect the strips together to any length you want either using a machine or by hand.

Quality Tests:After welding the LED strips together, we do another series of tests to make sure the strips work as promised. A lighting test confirms that the strips don’t have any loose circuits. Other optical and electric tests are done to ensure the LED strips meet all our standards and all your requirements.

Step 5: Aging and Waterproofing

The welded LED strips are put through a process called aging to check their performance. The LED strips are turned on for 12 hours straight to see if they’ll work seamlessly. This test helps us check the quality of the LED strips and troubleshoot any problems.

LED light strips are also put through a waterproofing process to increase their longevity. This process requires covering the LED strip with silicone, plastic or both. You can use a machine to do this or choose manual coverage.

Step 6: Tape Pasting and Packaging

Once the LED strips pass all the quality checks, we will paste 3M tape to their backs. This makes it easy for customers to install the LED light strips wherever they want. We use quality 3M tape that adheres to all surfaces easily.

The last step is packaging the LED light strips and ship them out to you.

Quality Tests:Our last quality test is a random inspection of LED strips that are ready for packaging. This helps us maintain our high standards of quality.

Factors Affecting the Quality of LED Strip Lights

LED light strips are only as good as their quality. The problem is that you can’t really tell the quality of a strip until you actually start using it. This is the reason why it is important to buy LED lights from a trusted LED manufacturer.

Here are some of the factors that affect the quality of LED light strips:

Quality of Copper Wire in PCB

Copper wires are used in the PCB board to make sure there is a seamless flow of current to all the components installed over it. The quality of the copper wire used can affect the performance of the LED strip.

If the copper wire is too thin, current won’t be able to pass through it and your LED strips may not work or suffer from Voltage Drop. Low-quality copper can also cause hindrance in current flow and affect the way your LED strip works.

Quality of Phosphor in LED

Phosphor is used in LEDs to increase the fluorescence of light. It is essential in producing pure white light that is bright and untainted. A poor quality phosphor can make your LED lights look dimmer. It can also cause the color to not be as pure.

It is important to note that phosphor does degrade with time and use. But good quality phosphor retains its structure longer, making your LED strips shine brightly for years.

Component Placement

It is essential that the LED components placed on the PCB are in their correct places. If not, the LED strip simply won’t work.

Another misstep is combining different sized LEDs on a single strip. This reduces the strip’s efficiency and accelerates the degeneration of phosphor. Different LEDs are usually combined to make a LED strip look brighter at a lower cost. But these LED strips do not last a long time and end up costing you more.

Component Quality

Component quality is a very important factor that makes or breaks your LED light strips. LED strips with good quality LEDs, resistors and PCBs stand out from the rest. They not only perform better but they last for longer as well.
Poor quality LEDs have problems with color consistency and die down sooner. Faulty resistors and PCBs affect the flow of current and may cause the LED strips to heat up.

5050 and 3528 are probably the most popular LED light strips in the market right now. You can actually light your entire project using one or both of these strips. But how do you choose between them? The answer depends on a number of factors. Read on to see what these factors are and how you can use them to choose the best LED light strip for your lighting project.

What is the meaning of the led strip light name?

This is the question that plagues most people who are just making the transition to LED lighting. What do the numbers mean? Are they a random set of numbers or do they represent a series? The answer is fairly simple. These numbers actually denote the size of the SMDs (surface mounted diodes) on the LED strip.
For example, 2835 LED strip is basically a strip that has LED chips with the dimensions 28mm × 35mm mounted on it. Here is an image of 2835 vs 5050 LED strip:

All LED light strips are recognized by similar 4-digit numbers that tell you the size of the LEDs mounted on them. This makes it easier for you to spot the LED that is suitable for your project or space.
So, this means the greater the number the brighter the LED light strip, right? Not necessarily. This brings us to the next question.

Which led strip light is more luminosity?

A bigger sized SMD does produce more light than a smaller one. However, when judging the luminosity of an LED strip there are other factors in play as well. For example, LED strip density. This denotes the number of SMDs on a single strip. This means that a 2835 LED strip with a higher LED density may produce the same amount of light as a 5050 LED strip with lower density. 

Another factor that affects luminosity is SMD placement on LED strips. If SMDs are placed closer together, the strip will produce more concentrated light. If they are placed far apart, the light will be diffused. So, a 2216 LEd light strip with SMDs placed closer together will look brighter than a 3014 LED light strip with SMDs placed at greater intervals.

Finally, the length of the strip itself also affects luminosity. A shorter strip might not be able to hold many SMDs, especially larger sized ones. This will make it less luminous than a longer strip, even if it is mounted by smaller SMDs. 

This does make buying the right LED light strip a little less straightforward. However, professional LED manufacturers have this information readily available on their websites, so it is easier for you to make an educated buying decision.

Features of 3528 LED Light Strip

3528 is one of the most famous LED light strips out there. That is because it offers just the right luminosity to be used in a number of different kinds of projects. As discussed above, this light strip has 35mm × 28mm SMDs mounted on it. These SMDs can produce 360 to 720 lumens of light per meter of the light strip, depending on the LED density. 

This makes these strips very versatile. The lower density 3528 strips can be used for feature lighting like plinth and coving lights in homes, bars, restaurants, hotels, and other locations. Higher density 3528 strips can be used in places where you require a large amount of ambient light like offices, schools, factories, and more. 

A great advantage of 3528 is that even though it packs quite a punch, the actual size of the LED strip is really compact. This means the strip can be used to light tight spaces easily and you can use a greater number of strips without worrying about it taking too much space. This strip is also available in a number of colors. Another advantage of the smaller size of 3528 LED light strips is that they do not give off a lot of heat and are even safe to touch. Features of 5050 LED Light Strip

On to the other most popular LED light strip, the 5050 is one of the first LED strips to house larger SMDs that are actually ‘tri-chips’. This means that each SMD house three separate chips. 5050 can, therefore, produce three different colors of light simultaneously. 

Each SMD is 50mm × 50mm in size and it can produce three times the light produces by smaller SMDs like the 3528. This light strip can produce up to a 1000 lumens per meter of light. This makes it perfect for lighting larger spaces like airports, hospitals, warehouses, factories, and more. 

5050 LED light strip is thicker and wider than most LED strips. This is because it has to house larger SMDs. This size is great for covering larger areas easily. Technically the brightest LED strips belong to the SMD 5730 series. But what does that mean exactly?

You may noticed that LED light strips come with names like 2216, 2835, 3528, 3020, 3014, 5050 and 5730. These numbers indicate the physical size of the LED strip. So 5050 is an LED strip that is 5mm × 5mm and so on. These numbers also indicate the series of LED strips.

SMD (Surface Mounted) 5730 series is the brightest LED strip because it contains powerful LEDs that can create a lot of light.  

It is important to note here that comparing one LED strip series to the other is like comparing apples to oranges. This is because you can make an LED strip as bright or dim as you want by changing the number of LEDs per strip and the distance between two LEDs on the strip.

How is LED Brightness Measured?

Lumens

The most common metric used to measure LED brightness is Lumens. Lumens are a measure of the total light produced by a LED. Derived from “luminous flux”, Lumens are calculated by placing a LED inside a sealed, reflective sphere. The light from the LED is then bounced around the sphere to calculate the flux of the bounce at one point. The Lumen is then calculated based on the size of the sphere. This is why higher power LEDs are called “high-flux.”

Lumens are used to judge the brightness of a LED strip. The greater the Lumens, the brighter the light emitted by the LED light strip. The Lumen rating is usually indicated with a number followed by the letters “lm.”

It is important to note that the Lumen rating in isolation may not give you an exact measure of the brightness of the LED light. You need to ask the following questions as well:

The lumens are indicated per what? Feet, meters or per reel?

How long is the strip or reel?

We use Lumens to measure the brightness of LED lights. Meanwhile, we use Watts to measure how much power they will draw. It’s important to note that power alone doesn’t indicate how bright the LED will be. Take a look at this comparison chart to see what we mean:

You can use this chart when transitioning from incandescent to LED lighting. For example, if you were using a 75 W bulb in your room, you can replace it with a 1100 lm LED light without compromising on the brightness. The chart also tells you how much energy you’ll be saving by using LED light strips.

Candelas

While lumens are used to measure the brightness of white light, millicandelas (mcd) are usually used to measure the brightness of colored LED lights. A candela is the measure of the total light created and pointed in a single direction.

Lumens measure the brightness of light across all wavelengths. All the wavelengths combine to make white light, so lumens are a more accurate measure for white light LED strips. Candelas measure the total brightness of light in a single wavelength, hence they are a better metric to measure colored LED strips.  

You can easily convert millicandelas to lumens but that will give you an inaccurate reading of the brightness of colored LED light strips. Since lumens measure light wavelengths across all colors in the visible spectrum, the lumen value of colored LED light strips will be deceptively low. When in fact, the colored light strip would be just as bright as a white light version of the same strip.

Lux

Lux is a lesser used metric for measuring LED brightness. Lux measures how much a light source illuminates an object or workspace placed one meter away from the light source. In other words, Lux measures the number of lumens per square meter.

Lux tells you the amount of luminance your LED light strip will produce. This helps you understand how much light you will actually see in a room or vehicle illuminated by LED strips. In addition to the light source, lux value also depends on the degree of reflection that will occur in any space.

This metric is useful when you are lighting a large space like a warehouse or a large room with lots of furniture. It is also great for measuring the efficacy of LED light strips used in vehicles like cars and airplanes.

The power draw of good quality LED lights should be more than 4 Watts per foot or 15 Watts per meter. Power draw of a LED light strip also helps you determine the cost of electricity.

Another factor that affects LED brightness and longevity is to determine if individual LEDs are being over driven. You can check this by dividing the LED wattage per foot by the strip density per foot. The individual LEDs should not be driven for more than 0.2 W each.

Determining the power supply through power draw is as simple as multiplying the LED strip power draw per feet to the strip length. For example, if the power draw for your LED light strip is 5 W per ft and the length of the LED strip is 5 ft:

Power Supply = 5 W power draw per ft × 5 ft length of strip = 25 Watts

LED Strip Length

The LED strip length also determines its brightness. Sometimes if the distance between the LED light strip and the power source is greater than 20 ft, a phenomenon called Voltage Drop occurs. The section of the LED strip that is furthest from the power source, gives off more diffused light than the rest of the strip. It may even flicker and die down completely.

To remedy this you need to do the following:

Use a thicker gauge wire between the power source and the LED strip

Use a parallel connection to power different strips along the same run

Use separate power supplies in different areas

As a rule, 12V powered LED strips will lose voltage faster than 24V powered ones. So, whenever possible, choose 24V powered LED light strips.
